Cultural monument
Church of Holy Virgin,
4, Rajačićeva Street

In the west part of the old downtown Zemun, developed since the beginning of the eighteenth century, the foundation stone for its Orthodox church was laid in 1777. The building of the church was financed by the Serbian and Greek Orthodox citizens of Zemun.

The church was sanctified in 1783. It is a single-nave building with a semi-circle apse, choir niche and a three-sectional nave. A copper dome is above the nave. The church was originally without a belfry in line with the traditional Serbian-Byzantine elements, similar to other old Orthodox churches in Vojvodina, but gained its present day form in a later reconstruction. A big belfry on the west side was built at the turn of the eighteenth century and the church was fundamentally reconstructed in 1880. Under the belfry there is a depository of rarities for the bones, according to the rules still observed in Greek orthodox churches, particularly at Mount Athos.

The Church of Virgin Mary is the largest church in old downtown Zemun, a single-nave building with shallow choir niches and graceful slender two-storey belfry springing from the west facade. The church has a richly carved baroque iconostasis carved by Aksentije, the carver, from a renowned artisan family Marković, with icons by a talented and productive icon painter and classicistic painter Arsenije Teodorović.

The church was renovated in 2000-2001, its fresco paintings were repaired, it got a new floor and floor heating. The church and the neighbouring Centre of the Serbian Orthodox community share one plot and make one entity.
